Gorilla Trekking — Volcanoes National Park

Briefing at 07:00 at Volcanoes National Park headquarters. You are assigned to the Umubano family. The trek takes 4-6 hours trekking through bamboo forest at 2500-4507m. Porters ($15) carry daypacks. When you find the family, you have exactly one hour to observe them. Success rate: 99%. Return to your lodge for a celebratory dinner. Entry to Volcanoes National Park: $$1,500 (gorilla permit) per person. The campfire is lit. Stories will be told.

Day 3

Golden Monkey Trek & Cultural Village

Morning trek to see the endangered golden monkeys — only 4,000 remain in the Virunga. The trek is shorter and easier than gorilla trekking. After lunch, visit a cultural village to learn about traditional Rwanda life: Intore dance, herbal medicine, banana beer brewing, archery. Return to your lodge for dinner and sunset views. The trek lasts 4-6 hours trekking at 2500-4507m elevation. Overnight at your mid lodge with views of Volcanoes National Park.

Dian Fossey Tomb Hike

Hike to the Karisoke Research Center and Dian Fossey's tomb, between Mount Bisoke and Mount Karisimbi. The hike takes 3-5 hours round trip, ascending through bamboo and Hagenia forest to 3,000m. Fossey lived here 18 years and changed how the world sees gorillas. Return to your lodge for a late lunch. Permit for Volcanoes National Park: $1500, booked 6 months ahead. Freshen up and join your group for a shared meal.

Arrival & Cultural Welcome

Upon arrival, you are greeted with a traditional welcome ceremony — songs, drums, smiles. Transfer to accommodation, then visit a local market — colorful and alive.
